Nephew wants a car cake for his fifteenth birthday

Over the years my nephew Timothy has had many car cakes and this year he wants one but I want to do something different. Instead of putting some toy cars on top of a cake I'm going to actually carve a car cake. A major undertaking for a home baker but I'm determined.
Any advice for someone who has never done this before?

I used to make sculpted cakes. And the "bug" was one of them. It was one of my best sellers too.

I made the VW "bus" too, but it did'nt sell like the "bug" did.
