Date bars my grandmother made!

My grandmother had a recipe for date bars, the base for these was a dark soda cake, it was spongy but not gooey. After cooling she would sprinkle the top with powdered sugar. She made them in a large sheet cake pan. I myself made this recipe and it is wonderful. I had my house ransacked and lost the recipe. I wonder if anybody thinks they have this or similar?
