Christmas cake preservatives usage

I had made Christmas plumb cake last year and I have leftover preservatives which is almost a year old. They have been soaking in rum ever since! can I use the preservatives to bake cakes this coming December?

I read an article some time ago about a baker who soaks the fruit in liquor for 2 years before baking fruit cake.

Alcohol is the best preservative. Commercial preservatives are not available to you. And they probably won’t work as well as alcohol anyway. Researchers found a 100 yr old fruitcake in the antarctic about 4 yrs ago. While the tin was in bad condition the cake was in near perfect edible condition.
